Diversity

 What is "Diversity"?

Lets' carry out a thought experiment. If you hail from, say, Delhi, and are in the same room as another person hailing from, say, Hyderabad, both of you may seem as "different" to each other. If that room were in, say, Japan, suddenly, the mutual differences would dissolve and the Japanese people might start to seem "different" to you. You might even begin to appreciate that you are not as different from the other person at all!

Let's extend the thought further. Say you become good friends with and is joined by a Japanese person in your room. You have advanced  technologically and are now a space faring species, the "room" is your spaceship, and you come face to face with an alien life form, would you still address yourself using your nationalities? Leave aside nationality, If you are like me, even species would not matter! In fact, you would probably have "one" name for all the habitants of earth, including you - "Earth dwellers"!.  Suddenly not as diverse, eh?

How did this transition occur? Did you somehow change? No, I guess not. As more context  is added, the differences started yielding to similarities. Why? You see, as the boundaries of our awareness begins to extend, "diversity" starts paving way for "homogeneity" and taking the same tenor as "unity".

In your spaceship, while travelling through space, gazing at its emptiness, your thoughts started to wander and you begin reflecting on how tiny the human existence is. It's now time to think "quantum"!  You begin to realize that at the most fundamental level we all are made of fermions like all matter is, that, from a nihilistic perspective, you are nothing more than a random arrangement of billions of these tiny particles working, miraculously, in tandem. You begin to wonder whether, in the grand scheme of universe, are you really that different from the bubble of Hydrogen gas or the cluster of nebulas? Your friend in the same room as you might differ and say yes, there is a difference indeed! The arrangement is different, stupid! And arrangement is all that matters! But you wonder, If instead of an arrangement of fermions we were all made of an arrangement of numbers from 0-9, would your friend still be able to tell the "difference" between two "numbers"? For all practical purposes, there is no "difference" between all those numbers. Each number is exactly as probable as any other number.

So, where am I going with this? I think that "Diversity" is nothing more than a trick or a illusion played on us by the language. It is the limitation of the language that forces us to think in terms of "Differences" when someone says "Diversity". The word may as well mean "Unity"!

Was just trying to expand on theme of "Diversity". Hoping, this piece was able to tickle your brains!

  1. Really thought provoking with invaluable message, what makes the difference is whether one is aware or is ignorant...very nicely expressed...keep up the good work.
